Postcodes in UK are made up of 'Outward' part and 'Inward' part. As the outward code is the most significant part of the system, it can be used to obtain a rough area level break up of the UK. Even it doesn't contain the premise level detail such as the street name, however, it is still useful for rough distance calculations and matching the first part of a postcode with a town or city.
